George W. Bush became the 43rd US president in 2001 at the age of 54, which is about the median age most presidents have taken office. To date, the youngest US president to take office is Theodore Roosevelt. He became the 26th president of the United States 42 years after the assassination of President William McKinley in 1901.

To be elected president, one has to be at least 35 years. John F. Kennedy, the 35th US president, was the youngest person elected to office at 43 years in 1961. Kennedy was assassinated in 1963 and became the youngest president to die at 46 years. Other presidents elected to office at a relatively young age are Bill Clinton and Ulysses S. Grant at 46 years and Barack Obama at 47 years.

Current president Joe Biden is the oldest president elected to office at 78 years. Before him, President Donald Trump was the oldest at 70 years.
